OVERVIEW
Davana essential oil is first and foremost an oil with a powerful aroma that remains so even when highly diluted. Its aroma is very rich, penetrating, warm, and uniquely herbaceous. This specialty essential oil is used in perfumery for its unique aroma and its extremely tenacious character. Davana is also used for fighting infections and calming anger.
In India, Davana blossoms are offered in daily rituals to Lord Shiva.
Davana oil should be used in small concentrations within your blends as it is high in ketones; if not sufficiently diluted, it may sensitize or irritate the skin.
Given its potency and typically high ketone percentages, Davana oil should be used in small concentrations within your aromatherapy or perfumery blends. Sue Clarke, author of Essential Chemistry for Aromatherapy, agrees with many others in the field that ketones should be used mindfully (at a maximum of 2%), not for prolonged periods of time, and not at all during pregnancy.
Aromatic Profile: Exceptionally rich, penetrating, strongly boozy (of dried fruits), sweet/herbaceous aroma; has warm, balsamic, woody, and bittersweet undertones and a slight camphoraceous note.
Appearance: Pale yellow to reddish gold, transparent, mobile liquid.
Aromatherapy Uses: Anti-infectious, anti-depressant, antiviral, emotionally relaxing.
Safety Considerations: High ketone content. Avoid use with small children, elders, epileptics, pregnant, and/or nursing women.
