Our fresh organic Lemon essential oil is the epitome of citrus with its intensely-fresh peel aroma and zesty, tangy/tart top note - sure to lift the spirits and perfect for composing introductory/top notes in natural perfumery. Like most citrus peel oils, limonene is the dominant molecule, with supporting roles by a tiny minority of terpenoid volatiles including citral, a star performer in Lemongrass that lends a tangy/tart bite to this aroma.
Easily identifiable aromas like Lemon, introduced through foods and traditional culture, are far from aromatic aliens. Like seeing a familiar face in a crowd of strangers, these molecules seem to know their well-traveled scent trails to the brain and are instantly recognized. These very personal associations may create impressions that last a lifetime and influence use. For some, the aroma of Lemon essential oil is said to sharpen and aid in focusing the mind, but it is also reported to have a gentle, calming effect. For Marcel Lavabre, "…the small lemon tree gives the impression of fresh, optimistic, fearless strength." For Suzanne Fischer-Rizzi, Lemon is a “rational” oil, helpful for calming or avoiding stormy emotional outbursts.
Citrus limon is native to Asia and is thought to be a hybrid of citron (C. medica) and pomelo (C. maxima). Lemon is widely used in food preparation, in perfumes, cosmetics and household products, and for the production of pectin and citric acid. Please use Lemon oil on the skin with caution and in low dilution due to the phototoxic effect of citrus oils; steam distilled citrus oils tend to be less phototoxic.
